N°002·Multi-Topology Compressor

COMP/X

Four selectable topologies, VCA, FET, OPTO, VARI-MU, each with authentic timing behaviour and its own harmonic signature. Four circuits, one philosophy, and a scroll tour through the real prototype, one scroll below.

01, The problem

Five knobs.
Zero picture.

Threshold, ratio, attack, release, makeup, five abstract numbers standing in for one spatial decision: where does this signal sit in the mix?

01, The problem

You guess.
The mix pays.

The wrong attack eats the punch, the wrong ratio eats the life. Most people guess, on every single channel.

02, The idea

Position,
not parameters.

COMP/X puts the signal on a stage as a single dot: pull it forward for grip, push it back for glue. The classic six follow your hand.

03, The circuits

Four real
electronics.

VCA, FET, OPTO, TUBE, timing and harmonics change with the circuit, not just the label on the front panel.

04, The result

Compression
you can see.

GR big and in view, spectrum delta, transfer curve, you don't just hear what's happening. You see it.

How it works

[ THREE MOVES ]
01
Place

Drag the signal into the room.

The mix stage turns position into compression. Pull the source forward for a lower threshold and higher ratio; push it back and it settles into gentle glue. Position is the preset.

02
Circuit

Choose the electronics.

VCA, FET, OPTO or TUBE, one click swaps the circuit, not just the label. Timing and harmonic signature change together, because that's what real electronics do.

03
Refine

Trim the envelope.

The classic six, threshold, ratio, knee, attack, release, makeup, sit ready when the stage gets you close and your ears want the last word. GR stays big and in view the whole time.

Spatial compression

Position is the preset.

Instead of guessing six parameters, you drag the signal across the mix stage and the compressor follows. Front means grip, lower threshold, higher ratio; back means glue. The character tracks the depth, the numbers stay honest.

Signal path

Four circuits, one path.

The detector listens first, RMS or peak, then hands the signal to whichever circuit you chose, with makeup last. Switching topology swaps the electronics in the core, never the layout: you always know where you are.

IN DETECTOR TOPOLOGY CORE MAKEUP OUT

00, Live

This is the real COMP/X.

Not a render, not a mockup, the actual prototype, running in your browser right now. Keep scrolling and we'll walk you through it, circuit by circuit.

01, Topologies

Four circuits, four characters.

VCA stays clean, FET punches, OPTO breathes smooth, TUBE leans in warm. Switching changes the timing and the harmonic signature together, not just the label on the front.

02, Mix Stage

Drag the signal into place.

The stage translates position into compression. Pull the source forward and you get a lower threshold, higher ratio, slower attack; push it back and it settles into gentle glue. Position is the preset.

03, GR

Gain reduction, front and centre.

One big number and a live bar, nothing decorative. You see every dB of reduction before you hear it.

04, Envelope

The classic six.

Threshold, ratio, knee, attack, release, makeup, laid out as precise print sliders instead of knob folklore. Every value readable, every move repeatable.

Signature features

[ EIGHT ]
01
Mix stage
Drag the signal across a 2D stage and the compressor follows, forward for grip, back for glue. Position is the preset; the six classics update underneath your hand.
02
Four topologies
VCA, FET, OPTO, TUBE, real circuit models, not skins. Each one brings its own timing behaviour and harmonic signature, one click apart.
03
GR front and centre
One big number and a live bar, nothing decorative. Every dB of gain reduction stays in view the whole session, you never compress blind.
04
Spectrum delta
A live overlay of what the compression changes spectrally, which frequencies duck, which step forward. Tone shifts you'd normally only notice three bounces later.
05
Transfer curve
The knee, drawn for real, input against output on the actual curve the circuit produces, with your signal riding along it in real time.
06
Density view
The dynamic distribution of your signal, before and after, one picture that shows whether you squeezed the life out or just tightened the seams.
07
Detection
Blend the detector from RMS to peak and the knee from soft to hard, how the compressor listens is just as adjustable as how it grabs.
08
Sidechain + M/S
Key the detector from an external source, or compress Mid and Side separately. Bus tricks and mastering moves, inside the same staged workflow.

Real workflows

[ USE CASES ]
01
Drum bus glue
VCA, signal at the back of the stage, slow attack. The kit breathes as one instrument and the transients walk through untouched.
02
Vocal ride
OPTO, front-centre on the stage, a gentle 3:1. The vocal sits on top of the mix in every chorus without a single fader move.
03
Master bus
TUBE, barely 1 dB of GR, more colour than control. The transfer curve confirms you're shading the mix, not squashing it.
"I stopped explaining attack times to clients. I move the dot and they hear it."

“I dragged the snare to the front of the stage and went 'oh. OH.' That was the moment it had me.”
Marco D.Mix Engineer · Köln
BETA 005
“Switched from FET to OPTO mid-session and the vocal just sat down where it belonged. I didn't touch a single other knob.”
Aki T.Producer · Tokyo
BETA 014
“I never really understood compressors, if I'm honest. This one I understand.”
